Please find below a statement by leading MEPs on EU-Ukraine relations on the elections in the so-called "Luhansk People's Republic" and "Donetsk People's Republic" on 11 November:
“We strongly condemn the unlawful elections that took place on the 11 November 2018 in the non-government controlled territories of the so-called “Luhansk People’s Republic” and “Donetsk People’s Republic”. The elections are in breach of international law, undermine the commitments taken under the Minsk agreements and violate Ukraine's sovereignty and law. We therefore do not recognize the election result.”
“We recall that the implementation of the Minsk agreements by all sides remains key to reaching a sustainable political solution to the conflict in eastern Ukraine and call on the Russian Federation and the illegal armed formations it backs to fully honour their commitments under these agreements.”
The statement was issued by:
Chair of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly Rebecca Harms (Greens/EFA, DE),
EP Foreign Affairs Committee Chair David McAllister (EPP, DE),
Chair of the Delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Association Committee, Dariusz Rosati (EPP, PL),
EP rapporteur on Ukraine Michael Gahler (EPP, DE).
