EU lawmakers are struggling to find a good balance between strengthening
security and protecting data privacy.
The member states demand that an agreement on data sharing of air passengers should be found by the end of the year. Rebecca Harms explained during the Euranet Plus “U Talking to Me?” debate that it is not the lack of stored information which is problematic. “Only by making the mountain of data we are collecting bigger we will not increase the security situation. And I found very interesting that many experts, also on terrorism, told us: it is not we are lacking data, we are lacking analytical competencies, we are lacking of expert staffs on this,” Harms said.
