Sweden (and Finland), where nuclear waste management plans are most
advanced, there remain major uncertainties over the scientific
justification for disposal, as well as obstacles centered around
political, legal and financial issues. A landmark ruling by the
Environment Court
in 2018
put the entire copper canister disposal concept (KBS-3) for Sweden's
nuclear waste in doubt. This court case and its possible consequences
are also relevant for Finland, as the country's waste management concept
is also based on the KBS-3 concept.
