Rebecca Harms comments on the upcoming vote in the Ukrainian
Parliament on the draft law on a High Anti-Corruption Court
"The upcoming vote in
the Rada on the creation of a specialised High Anti-Corruption Court is a very
important step in the Ukrainian reform process. Implementing the Venice
Commission’s recommendations, especially regarding the court’s jurisdiction and
the selection process of judges, is not only crucial, it is also one of the
preconditions for further international and European financial support to
Ukraine.
I also hope that my colleagues in the Ukrainian Parliament will finally lift the e-declaration obligations for anti-corruption NGO activists and decide on a politically balanced Central Election Commission
All these steps would represent major progress in the fight against corruption, as well as bring Ukraine closer towards fair elections in 2019. I hope that this will finally be the result of the many productive discussions we had among colleagues from the Ukrainian and European Parliaments."
