Rebecca Harms, Greens/EFA Member of the European Parliament and expert on Turkey has initiated an open letter with other MEPs, which has been sent to President Donald Tusk and President Jean-Claude Juncker ahead of their meeting with President Erdogan at the EU-Turkey Summit, to be held on Monday 26 March in Varna, Bulgaria.
75 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have co-signed this letter in which they are urging the EU leaders to bring human rights to the centre of EU relations with Turkey and press President Erdogan to secure the release of dozens of journalists and many others unjustly jailed in Turkey.
They are demanding that closer relations between the European Union and Turkey can only be conditioned on the lifting of the state of emergency, returning to rule of law, releasing detained journalists, human rights defenders and elected politicians, and ensuring accountability for torture and ill-treatment committed in police custody.
