Let the European Election Campaign Begin!

It all starts with a big thank-you! My sincere thanks to all who supported my election to the party council of the Greens at the federal delegates’ conference (Bundesdelegiertenkonferenz) in Berlin. I also want to express my gratitude for the overwhelming support of my candidacy in the Green primaries, in which we call on all supporters of green policy to identify the Green top duo for the European election.

We need to maintain a strong Green presence in the European Parliament. This is all the more true as we are about to see another grand coalition government in Germany. This coalition will pursue the wrong course on many European issues that need to be addressed. This particularly applies to climate protection and energy policy. Instead of pushing for sustainability, the old growth ideology is being unearthed again. The new eco-social dawn is threatened with a serious rollback.

The stronger our parliamentary group, the greater our chances of stemming the tide. The primaries can become an opportunity for us Greens all over Europe to reach out to many more people and to get them interested in Europe and in Green ideas for change. I also hope that this experiment can be a small contribution towards lessening the constantly bemoaned rift between the politicians in Brussels and the people out in the different countries.

If we are to succeed, we must mobilize as many people as possible for the primaries. From November 10th onwards, we candidates will be touring through the European states. We will appear live in numerous cities. We will also run public online chats. Throughout this tour, we will try to answer as many questions from citizens as possible.

On my Facebook page, you can take another close look at my primary candidacy speech.

I am eagerly awaiting the Green primary. Getting involved counts. And I look forward to the Green European election campaign!
